Okta 2-factor Authentication with Outlook 2013

Product: MS Office 2013 with Outlook 2013, Okta multi-factor authentication

Encountered issue to configure Outlook 2013 (Office 2013) client (not server) with Okta multi-factor authentication in new machines.  Found that the information about enabling is distributed, and often incomplete.

This post is listing a list of items to perform in order to get Okta multi-factor authentication to work
  1. Install Office 2013 (or Outlook 2013 alone) base version
  2. Install Office 2013 SP1 patch
  3. Install following Office 2013 patches:

  4. Enable Office Modern Authentication
    1. Create a text file with following entries:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity]
    "Version"=dword:00000001
    "EnableADAL"=dword:00000001
    1. Rename the text file to Office2013_EnableADAL.reg
    2. Double click Office2013_EnableADAL.reg created above to create the entry in Windows Registry
    3. Administrator privilege is required
  5. Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager
    1. Click on "Windows Credentials"
    2. Look into "Generic Credentials" section
    3. Delete any generic credential entries below:
      1. MicrosoftOffice15_Data:ADAL:[hexadecimal]
    4. If computer's Outlook 2013 has configured before, there should be 15 entries
    5. If this is fresh Outlook 2013 installation, there will be no entry, so this step can be skipped
  6. Reboot computer and get ready to launch Outlook 2013 to see it open up Okta page for corporate authentication
If above Office 2013 patch won't pop up Okta browser authentication page, then install following security patches:

  5. KB4022189 - Security Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB4022189) 64-Bit Edition
  6. KB4022188 - Security Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB4022188) 64-Bit Edition
  7. KB4018387 - Security Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB4018387) 64-Bit Edition
