Encountered issue to configure Outlook 2013 (Office 2013) client (not server) with Okta multi-factor authentication in new machines. Found that the information about enabling is distributed, and often incomplete.
This post is listing a list of items to perform in order to get Okta multi-factor authentication to work
- Install Office 2013 (or Outlook 2013 alone) base version
- Install Office 2013 SP1 patch
- Install following Office 2013 patches:

- Enable Office Modern Authentication
- Create a text file with following entries:
- Rename the text file to Office2013_EnableADAL.reg
- Double click Office2013_EnableADAL.reg created above to create the entry in Windows Registry
- Administrator privilege is required
- Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager
- Click on "Windows Credentials"
- Look into "Generic Credentials" section
- Delete any generic credential entries below:
- MicrosoftOffice15_Data:ADAL:[hexadecimal]
- If computer's Outlook 2013 has configured before, there should be 15 entries
- If this is fresh Outlook 2013 installation, there will be no entry, so this step can be skipped
- Reboot computer and get ready to launch Outlook 2013 to see it open up Okta page for corporate authentication
